1.1.20
Nyāya Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.20
प्रवृत्तिदोषजनितोऽर्थः फलम्
pravṛttidoṣajanito 'rthaḥ phalam
The line
The fruit is the thing produced by activity and by fault.
नेपालीमा
फल प्रवृत्ति र दोषले जन्माएको कुरा हो।
Where it sits
phala from 1.1.9 is the word being defined. pravṛtti (प्रवृत्ति) from 1.1.17 and doṣa (दोष) from 1.1.18 are in force as its two sources.
Split: pravṛtti-doṣa-janitaḥ (प्रवृत्ति-दोष-जनितः) + arthaḥ (अर्थः) + phalam (फलम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| pravṛtti-doṣa-janitaḥ (प्रवृत्ति-दोष-जनितः) | nominative singular, masculine | born of activity and fault |
| arthaḥ (अर्थः) | nominative singular, masculine | the thing reached |
| phalam (फलम्) | nominative singular, neuter | the fruit |
The phrases
phala is what comes of acting under a fault. janita means born, produced. The sources named in the compound are pravṛtti (प्रवृत्ति) and doṣa (दोष), just defined.
artha here is the thing one comes to have, the result. It is not the sense-object of 1.1.14. Pleasure and pain are the results one actually meets, but this line only says 'the thing produced'.
Sanskrit in this line
janitaḥ (जनितः) before arthaḥ (अर्थः) is recited janito 'rthaḥ (र्थः). The avagraha marks the elided a. artha in 1.1.14 and artha in this line are two uses of one noun.
Say it back
Keep two glosses of artha apart: the object of a sense, and the fruit of action.
