विमृश्य पक्षप्रतिपक्षाभ्यामर्थावधारणं निर्णयः

vimṛśya pakṣapratipakṣābhyām arthāvadhāraṇaṃ nirṇayaḥ

The line

Decision is the settling of the thing, once one has deliberated by means of the thesis and the counter-thesis.

नेपालीमा

निर्णय भनेको पक्ष र प्रतिपक्षबाट विचार गरिसकेपछि वस्तुको निश्चय गर्नु हो।

Where it sits

nirṇaya (निर्णय) from 1.1.1 is the word being defined. vimarśa (विमर्श) from 1.1.23 is in force as the deliberation this gerund completes. tarka from 1.1.40 can feed the deliberation, but the line does not name it.

Split: vimṛśya (विमृश्य) + pakṣa-pratipakṣābhyām (पक्ष-प्रतिपक्षाभ्याम्) + artha-avadhāraṇam (अर्थ-अवधारणम्) + nirṇayaḥ (निर्णयः)

Sanskrit, in depth

The words

vimṛśya (विमृश्य)indeclinable, gerundhaving deliberated
pakṣa-pratipakṣābhyām (पक्ष-प्रतिपक्षाभ्याम्)instrumental dual, masculineby means of the thesis and the counter-thesis
artha-avadhāraṇam (अर्थ-अवधारणम्)nominative singular, neuterthe settling of the thing
nirṇayaḥ (निर्णयः)nominative singular, masculinedecision

The phrases

nirṇaya (निर्णय) ends the doubt. vimṛśya (विमृश्य) is the gerund of the same root as vimarśa (विमर्श), the wavering in the definition of doubt. One has turned the matter over. Then one determines it.

The two instruments are pakṣa (पक्ष) and pratipakṣa (प्रतिपक्ष), a position and the position against it. avadhāraṇa (अवधारण) is a fixing down of the artha. After both sides have been weighed, one of them holds. That holding is the decision. Debate in the next section lives on this pair of sides.

Sanskrit in this line

The ending -ābhyām (-आभ्याम्) is instrumental dual. Both pakṣa (पक्ष) and pratipakṣa (प्रतिपक्ष) are masculine. arthāvadhāraṇam (अर्थावधारणम्) before nirṇayaḥ (निर्णयः) is recited with anusvāra (अनुस्वार).

Say it back

Pair saṃśaya (संशय) with nirṇaya (निर्णय): wavering that waits on a viśeṣa (विशेष), then avadhāraṇa (अवधारण) after both pakṣas (पक्ष).
