8. Hiḍimbā, and the village demon
Ādi (आदि)
In the forest Bhīma keeps watch while the others sleep. A rākṣasī, Hiḍimbā, comes meaning to eat them and stays to love him. Her brother Hiḍimba does not share the change of heart and is killed. Hiḍimbā asks Kuntī for Bhīma as a husband, for a time, and a son is born, Ghaṭotkaca, who will grow up in the non-human world and come to the war when his father calls, and die there buying the Pāṇḍavas a night. Even the forest marriage is already a casualty of a war that has not started.
They go on in the dress of brahmins and come to a village, Ekacakrā, living on what they beg. The village pays a tribute to a demon, Baka: a cart of food, and the person who drives it, on a schedule. Kuntī offers Bhīma for the turn. He goes with the food, eats it himself, and fights the demon until the tribute ends. The village is free. The princes are still officially dead.
Vyāsa finds them and points them toward the kingdom of the Pañcālas. Drupada, the king Droṇa has not forgotten, is holding a svayaṃvara for his daughter. The fire, the forest, and the village have been a road. It ends at a bow.
नेपालीमा
वनमा अरू सुत्दा भीमले पहरा दिए। हिडिम्बा नामकी राक्षसी उनीहरूलाई खान आइन्, तर भीमलाई माया गरेर बसिन्। उनका भाइ हिडिम्बले मन परिवर्तन गरेनन्, र मारिए। हिडिम्बाले कुन्तीसँग केही समयका लागि भीमलाई पति मागिन्, र छोरा घटोत्कच जन्मे। उनी मानवबाहिरको संसारमा हुर्केर बुबाले बोलाउँदा युद्धमा आउनेछन्, र त्यहाँ पाण्डवहरूका लागि एक रात किनेर मर्नेछन्। वनको विवाह पनि सुरु नभएको युद्धको एउटा क्षति थियो। ब्राह्मणको भेषमा भिक्षा मागेर खाँदै हिँड्दा पाण्डवहरू एकचक्रा नामको गाउँमा पुगे। त्यो गाउँले बक नामको दानवलाई तोकिएको पालोमा खानाको गाडा र त्यो हाँक्ने मानिस पठाउनुपर्थ्यो। कुन्तीले पालोका लागि भीमलाई प्रस्ताव गरिन्। भीम खाना लिएर गए, आफैँ खाए, र दानवसँग लडेर त्यो कर अन्त्य गरे। गाउँ मुक्त भयो। राजकुमारहरू अझै आधिकारिक रूपमा मरेका मानिएका थिए। व्यासले उनीहरूलाई भेटेर पाञ्चालको राज्यतिर देखाए। त्यहाँ द्रुपदले, जसलाई द्रोणले बिर्सेका छैनन्, छोरीको स्वयंवर राखेका थिए। आगो, वन र गाउँ बाटो थिए। त्यो बाटो धनुमा गएर टुङ्गिन्छ।
