11. The forest that was eaten
Ādi (आदि)
Indraprastha needs a hall worthy of the rājasūya Yudhiṣṭhira is beginning to imagine, and the poem gives him a builder by way of a fire. Agni is sick, the telling says, from too much ghee, and he can be well only if he eats the Khāṇḍava forest. Indra protects that forest with rain, because his friend the serpent Takṣaka lives there. Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa hold the rain off. The forest burns. This page says that it burned. It does not describe the fire.
Takṣaka is away. His son Aśvasena is not, and he escapes the fire. A serpent's grudge enters the poem here and waits. In the war Aśvasena will ride Karṇa's arrow at Arjuna. Takṣaka himself, years and a generation later, will kill Parīkṣit under the sage Śṛṅgin's curse, and that death brings Janamejaya's sacrifice, which is where this chronicle began. The frame and the forest are one story, told from the two ends.
Out of the burning comes Maya, an asura architect, spared because he asks and because Arjuna is the one who can spare him. Maya asks what to give. The gift he is told to give is a hall. The wilderness the cousins were handed is about to become a room in which a proud man can be made to look like a fool.

इन्द्रप्रस्थलाई युधिष्ठिरले कल्पना गर्न थालेको राजसूयका योग्य सभा चाहिएको थियो, र कविताले आगोको माध्यमबाट उनलाई निर्माता दिन्छ। अग्निलाई धेरै घिउले रोग लागेको थियो, र खाण्डव वन खाएपछि मात्र ऊ निको हुन सक्थ्यो। इन्द्रले वर्षाले त्यो वनको रक्षा गरे, किनभने उनका मित्र सर्प तक्षक त्यहीँ बस्थे। अर्जुन र कृष्णले वर्षा रोके। वन जल्यो। यो पृष्ठले जल्यो भन्छ। आगोको तरिका लेख्दैन। तक्षक बाहिर थिए। उनका छोरा अश्वसेन भने त्यहीँ थिए, र आगोबाट उम्के। सर्पको रिस यहीँ कवितामा पस्छ र पर्खिन्छ। युद्धमा अश्वसेन कर्णको बाणमा चढेर अर्जुनतिर जानेछन्। तक्षकले आफैँ, वर्षौँ र एक पुस्तापछि, शृङ्गी ऋषिको श्रापले परीक्षितलाई मार्नेछन्, र त्यो मृत्युले जनमेजयको यज्ञ ल्याउँछ, जहाँबाट यो वृत्तान्त सुरु भयो। चौखट र वन एउटै कथा हुन्, दुई छेउबाट सुनाइएका। जलिरहेको वनबाट असुर वास्तुकार मय निस्के, जसलाई उनले बिन्ती गरेकाले र अर्जुनले जोगाउन सक्ने भएकाले जोगाइयो। मयले के दिऊँ भनेर सोधे। उनलाई दिन भनिएको उपहार एउटा सभा हो। उनीहरूलाई दिइएको उजाड अब त्यस्तो कोठा बन्न लागेको छ, जहाँ अहङ्कारी मानिसलाई मूर्खजस्तो देखाउन सकिन्छ।
