47. A thousand names, and the sun turns
Anuśāsana (अनुशासन)
The instruction continues in the Anuśāsana, and it narrows toward a devotion. Bhīṣma speaks the thousand names of Viṣṇu. The names are not sat here. They have their map on the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma, and the vulgate places that hymn in chapter 149 of this parva. A dying kṣatriya gives a king a litany instead of another policy. The chronicle records the gift and does not recite it.
Other gifts of conduct fill the parva: what is given to whom, what food, what restraint. This page does not turn those lists into a rule of life. It says they are there, in the vulgate, as a king's last curriculum, and that a reader who wants a verse goes to the shelf that has actually sat one.
Then the sun turns north. Bhīṣma, who has been waiting since the tenth day, consents. The vow of the young Devavrata, the terrible vow that emptied the succession and filled the poem, ends in an act of will. He teaches Yudhiṣṭhira how to let him go, and he goes. What is left of both armies honors him. Ambā's life, Śikhaṇḍin's body, the arrows, the water from the ground, the bedside weeks, are over. The strongest man in the Kuru line has used his last strength to stop being the reason the line cannot heal.
