21. Jayadratha

Vana (वन)

In the poem's order this comes before Sāvitrī's story, which the last sitting told ahead of its place. Not every visitor to the hermitage is a sage. Jayadratha, king of the Sindhus, husband of Duryodhana's sister Duḥśalā, sees Draupadī and decides that a woman in the forest is a woman he may take. He carries her off. This page says that he carried her off. It does not dwell on the seizing.

The brothers return. Bhīma is for killing him. Yudhiṣṭhira remembers Duḥśalā, and the politics of a sister's husband, and Jayadratha is spared. Tellings differ on the humiliation that is laid on him instead. Some have him shaved and driven. This page does not choose the form of the shame. It records that he lives, and that he leaves with a hatred large enough to spend the rest of his life on.

He will ask Śiva for a boon, and the boon will be a day. On the thirteenth day of the war he will be able to hold every Pāṇḍava except Arjuna at the mouth of a formation, and a boy will die inside it because of that holding. The forest episode looks like a side crime. It is the reason a father will make a vow about sunset.
