Purāṇa / Skanda Purāṇa / Guru Gītā
Guru Gītā (गुरुगीता)
A dialogue that introduces itself as belonging to the Skanda Purāṇa. Śiva speaks to Pārvatī about the teacher. The Skanda profile already says what circulates under that name: a set of khaṇḍas, and around them a cloud of praises that shelve themselves as Skanda. The Guru Gītā is one of those travels. Stand-alone printings do not agree on length, so this page does not freeze a verse count.
The claim is that knowledge of the self arrives through a teacher, and that the teacher is honored as the person in whom that knowledge can be heard. The dialogue piles names and praises. Households also chant it. This page keeps the claim. It gives no steps of a chant, no counts, and no offerings. No śloka is supplied from memory to look like the text.
What "teacher" is doing here
- The hearer is Pārvatī, and the speaker is Śiva, so the teaching about teachers is itself a teaching inside a marriage of teacher and hearer.
- The praise treats the teacher's feet, the teacher's word, and the teacher's glance as the places knowledge becomes near enough to receive.
- A śāstra of the same need, in another voice, is Śaṅkara's Upadeśasāhasrī, a teacher speaking to a student in verses that are sat.
- The printed Śiva Purāṇa of seven saṃhitās is a different book. This dialogue is not one of those saṃhitās.
Where it sits
The Aṣṭāvakra Gītā is a teacher and a king with the verses sat. The Devī Gītā is a goddess teaching her father. The Guru Gītā is the purāṇic praise of the role both of those dialogues simply perform. Skanda's own story, the young commander against Tāraka, stays on the profile. This page is the dialogue about the one who teaches.
