Nāṭyaśāstra (नाट्यशास्त्र), rasa

na hyekarasajaṃ kāvyaṃ naikabhāvaikavṛttikam |
vimarde rāgamāyāti prayuktaṃ hi prayatnataḥ

The line

No poem is born of a single rasa (रस), nor of one state and one style. Joined with effort, it reaches its color in the conflict.

Where it sits

Bracketed. Vimarḍa (विमर्ड) is the conflict of the plot. Rāga (राग) here is color, the charge the performance takes on. In the music rooms rāga (राग) is the melodic mode. The word is the same. This verse is speaking of the color a poem reaches when its states contend.
