Where it sits
This line and the next four stand inside brackets in the pāṭha (पाठ). 6.15 and 6.83 say eight. 6.82*5 says nine. The brackets are why both counts can be read. The prose inside the brackets says śānta (शान्त) has peace as its stable state and sets a person moving toward release, and that it arises from knowledge of reality, dispassion, and purity of mind. Its acting is restraint, observance, meditation, holding, worship, and kindness to every being. Abhinavagupta defends śānta (शान्त) as the ninth. His argument is the commentary, and it is not this verse.
