Nāṭyaśāstra (नाट्यशास्त्र), rasa
yasmāttasmādamī bhāvā vijñeyā nāṭyayoktṛbhiḥ
The line
Because they bring these rasa (रस) states into being, bound up with many kinds of acting, therefore these are to be known as bhāva (भाव) states by the speakers of drama.
Where it sits
The prose before the verse reports a disagreement. Some say rasa (रस) and bhāva (भाव) arise from each other. The prose says the arising of rasa (रस) is seen from the bhāva (भाव) states, and the arising of bhāva (भाव) is not seen from the rasa (रस) states. This verse gives the root: bhāva (भाव) is what brings the rasa (रस) into being. 6.36 and 6.38 speak again, and they do not all face the same way.
