Purāṇa / Gaṇeśa Gītā
Gaṇeśa Gītā (गणेशगीता)
A dialogue in the Krīḍā-khaṇḍa of the Gaṇeśa Purāṇa (गणेशपुराण). That purāṇa is an upapurāṇa (उपपुराण). The eighteen Mahāpurāṇas profiled on this shelf do not include it. Gaṇeśa teaches King Vareṇya. The shape follows the Bhagvad Gītā: a king in grief, a god as the teacher, a teaching on duty and on knowledge, and a vision. The page keeps the pair as Vareṇya and Gaṇeśa, on an afternoon of their own.
The Gaṇeśa Purāṇa is usually met in two khaṇḍas, Upāsanā and Krīḍā. The Gītā sits in the second, the khaṇḍa of the god's play, where Vareṇya's story is told and the teaching interrupts it. This page does not freeze a chapter inside that khaṇḍa. No śloka is supplied from memory to look like the text. It gives no rite.
What the resemblance is
- A king who cannot see how to go on. A divine teacher who answers at length.
- Duty, knowledge, and devotion set in one talk, with a vision so the talk is not only sentences.
- The Bhagavad Gītā's hearer is Arjuna and its hour is the war. This hearer is Vareṇya and its book is an upapurāṇa of Gaṇeśa.
- The shelf can love the pattern and still keep the books apart. A pattern is how a tradition teaches. It is not a claim that one text was copied out of the other.
Where it sits
The Mahāpurāṇa door of this pillar is the purāṇas. The Gaṇeśa Gītā is here because the philosophical companions include the dialogues that wear the Gītā's shape, including one whose book is outside the eighteen. The Devī Gītā and the Īśvara Gītā are the other two great wearers of that shape already mapped from their own purāṇas.
