Devī Gītā (देवीगीता)

A dialogue of the Devī Bhāgavata Purāṇa (देवीभागवतपुराण), often printed as chapters 31 through 40 of the seventh skandha. The Goddess teaches Himālaya, her father in that telling. She shows a cosmic form, in the way the eleventh chapter of the Bhagvad Gītā shows one, and then she teaches knowledge, yoga, and devotion, and the form is withdrawn. The hearer is a mountain who asked. The speaker is the power the mountain's daughter, in other tellings, will embody.

The Devī Māhātmya is the other great Goddess text on this shelf. It sits inside the Mārkaṇḍeya, often printed as chapters 81 through 93: three episodes, and a refrain that is sat. The Devī Bhāgavata is a different purāṇa. This shelf's eighteen profiles include the Bhāgavata and the Mārkaṇḍeya. The Devī Bhāgavata has no profile of its own here. This page is the map of the one dialogue. No śloka is supplied from memory to look like the text.

What the father is shown

Where it sits

Read the Māhātmya for the three episodes and the refrain. Read this page for the instruction to Himālaya. The Bhagvad Gītā is the poem whose shape this dialogue openly shares: grief or bewilderment, a teaching, a vision, a life to be lived afterward. The hearer there is Arjuna. The hearer here is a mountain.
