Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.15
कर्मसु भावात् कर्मत्वमुक्तम्
karmasu bhāvāt karmatvam uktam
The line
Actionness is declared because of its presence in actions.
नेपालीमा
कर्मत्व कर्महरूमा रहेकाले भनिन्छ।
Where it sits
Parallel to 1.2.13, without tathā (तथा). 1.2.16 is the last refrain. 1.2.17 then returns to sattā (सत्ता) and says it is one.
Split: karmasu (कर्मसु) + bhāvāt (भावात्) + karmatvam (कर्मत्वम्) + uktam (उक्तम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| karmasu (कर्मसु) | locative plural, neuter | in actions. |
| bhāvāt (भावात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of its presence. |
| karmatvam (कर्मत्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | actionness. |
| uktam (उक्तम्) | nominative singular, neuter | is declared. |
The phrases
The five actions of 1.1.7 share karmatva. That sharing is how actionness is known.
tathā (तथा) is not repeated. The pattern is already set. The locative does the work.
Sanskrit in this line
The locative karmasu is 'in actions.' bhāvāt (भावात्) is because of being there. Same tools as 1.2.13.
