Bhagvad Gītā (भगवद्गीता)

Executive summary

The Bhagavad Gītā (गीता) is the poem of the yoga the sūtras (सूत्र) define, said on a battlefield before the bow comes back up. Eighteen chapters. Arjuna sees his own people and sits down. Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) answers: the self is not the body, action is a right and not a claim on the fruit, and the one who is dear is the one whose mind has been given. The sections inside a chapter are this book's groupings of the verses. A quiz closes each section. The sitting is still one verse at a time.

Bhagvad Gītā (भगवद्गीता) joins bhagavat (भगवत्) and gītā (गीता). The t (त्) is voiced to d (द्) before g (ग्). Spoken Hindi and Nepali drop the short a (अ), and the name is heard as Bhagvad. This title and the address keep the written form.

The poem sits in the Bhīṣma-parva of the Mahābhārata, and it is the crown of the Itihāsa pillar. The shelves of darśana are the other pillar. Chapter 12 is the chapter to read beside the Nārada Bhakti Sūtras.

📖 See this moment in the 18-parva Mahābhārata chronicle. The bow slips in the Bhīṣma parva, and the speech that follows is this shelf.
