1–14 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Two natures

Summary

Two natures. Hear how, the mind attached, one knows Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) in full. Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and the I sense are the lower nature. The higher is the life by which the world is held. All beings have their origin there and he supports them. The divine māyā (माया) of the strands is hard to cross. Those who cross come to him.

7.1Śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) said: Hear this, Pārtha (पार्थ), how you will know me whole and with no doubt left, your mind fastened on me, practicing the yoking, with me as your refuge.7.2I will tell you this knowing, together with discernment, without a remainder. Once it is known, nothing further remains here to be known.7.3Among thousands of humans, someone strives for the attainment. Even among those strivers who have reached it, someone knows me as I am.7.4Earth, water, fire, wind, space, mind, intellect, and ego: this is my eightfold nature.7.5This is the lower one. Know my other nature, the higher, mighty-armed one: it has become the life by which this world is held.7.6Take it that all beings have these as their source. I am the origin of the whole world, and likewise its dissolution.7.7Nothing whatever is higher than me. All this is strung on me like pearls on a thread.7.8I am the taste in water, Kaunteya (कौन्तेय), and the light in the moon and the sun, the syllable om (ओम्) in all the Vedas, the sound in space, and the manliness in men.7.9And I am the pure smell in the earth, the brilliance in fire, the life in all beings, and the austerity in those who practice it.7.10Know me, Pārtha (पार्थ), as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the understanding of those who understand, and I am the brilliance of the brilliant.7.11And I am the strength of the strong, the strength desire and passion have left. In beings I am the desire that does not stand against dharma, bull of the Bharatas.7.12Whatever states there are, of clarity, of drive, and of darkness, know them as come from me alone. But I am not in them. They are in me.7.13Deluded by these three states made of the strands, this whole world does not recognize me, higher than they are, and imperishable.7.14This divine māyā (माया) of mine, made of the guṇas (गुण), is hard to cross. Those who come to me cross it.QuizFive questions on Two natures.

15–30 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Who comes, and who does not

Summary

Who comes, and who does not. The worst of people, their knowledge taken by māyā (माया), do not come. Four kinds of good people do: the suffering, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the knower. The knower is set apart as his very self. Those who worship other gods worship him, but not in the way that lasts. The section closes on the one who knows him at the hour of death.

7.15People of bad action do not come to me, the deluded, the lowest of men. Their knowledge has been carried off by māyā (माया), and they rest on an asuric way of being.7.16Four kinds of people of good action turn to me, Arjuna (अर्जुन): the one in distress, the one who wants to know, the one who wants a result, and the one who knows, bull of the Bharatas.7.17Of them, the one who knows, always yoked, of single devotion, stands out. I am exceedingly dear to the one who knows, and he is dear to me.7.18Noble, all of these. But the one who knows is my very self: that is my view. For he, his self yoked, has taken his stand on me alone, the goal nothing is higher than.7.19At the end of many births, the one who knows comes to me: Vāsudeva (वासुदेव) is all.7.20Those whose knowledge has been taken by one desire and another come to other deities, taking up this observance and that, held by their own nature.7.21Whichever form a devotee wants to worship with faith, I make that very person's faith unshaking.7.22Yoked with that faith, he works at the worship of that form, and from it he obtains those desires, which I myself have arranged.7.23But that fruit of those of small understanding comes to an end. Those who sacrifice to the gods go to the gods. My devotees go to me as well.7.24People without understanding think me the unmanifest who has come into a manifestation. They do not know my higher being, imperishable, with nothing above it.7.25I am not manifest to everyone. I am wrapped in the yogamāyā (योगमाया). This deluded world does not recognize me, unborn and imperishable.7.26I know the beings that have passed, that are present, and that will be, Arjuna (अर्जुन). But me, no one knows.7.27By the delusion of the pairs, risen from desire and aversion, all beings go to complete delusion at creation, Bhārata (भारत), scorcher of the foe.7.28But those people of good deeds whose pāpa (पाप) has come to an end, they, freed from the delusion of the pairs, turn to me with firm vows.7.29Those who strive, having taken refuge in me, for release from old age and death, they know that brahman (ब्रह्म), the whole of what belongs to the self, and action entire.7.30And those who know me together with what stands over beings, over the gods, and over the sacrifice, they, their minds yoked, know me even at the time of departure.QuizFive questions on Who comes, and who does not.
