1–10 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān, Arjuna (अर्जुन) · This teaching is old

Summary

This teaching is old. It was given to Vivasvat and came down a line. Arjuna asks how Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण), born now, could have said it then. Many births have passed. When dharma declines he arises. One who knows that birth and that action as divine does not go to another birth. The section is the authority of the teaching, and the descent.

11–23 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Action and inaction

Summary

Action and inaction. As people approach him, so he meets them. The four classes are distinguished by the strands and by work, and he is not their doer. What is action, what is wrong action, and what is inaction are hard to see. The one who sees inaction in action is wise. The section frees the word action from the mere moving of limbs.

4.11As they come to me, so I meet them; human beings follow my path in every way, Pārtha (पार्थ).4.12Those who want the success of their actions sacrifice here to the gods; in the human world, success born of action comes quickly.4.13The fourfold order was sent forth by me, according to the division of qualities and actions; know me as its maker and also as no maker, imperishable.4.14Actions do not stain me, and I have no longing in the fruit of action; who knows me thus is not bound by actions.4.15Knowing this, the ancients who sought release also did action; therefore you too do action, the older deed done by those of old.4.16Even the wise are confused here about what action is and what inaction is; I shall declare that action to you, knowing which you will be freed from what is not good.4.17Action must be understood, and wrong action, and inaction; the course of action is dense.4.18Who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is wise among men.4.19Whose undertakings are all free of desire and resolve, him the discerning call wise, his actions burned by the fire of knowledge.4.20Having dropped the clinging to the fruit, always content, with nothing to lean on, he does nothing at all even while he is engaged in the action.4.21Without expectation, mind and self held, every grasping dropped, he does not obtain a stain while doing mere bodily action.4.22Content with what comes of itself, past the pairs, without envy, even in success and in failure, he is not bound even though he has acted.4.23For the one whose attachment is gone, who is free, whose mind rests in knowledge, and who acts for sacrifice, the whole action dissolves.QuizFive questions on Action and inaction.

24–33 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Sacrifice widened

Summary

Sacrifice is widened. The offering, the butter, the fire, and the offerer can all be Brahman. Some offer wealth, some austerity, some the breath in the breath. Knowledge as sacrifice is set above the sacrifices of objects. The section multiplies the word yajña (यज्ञ) until it is no longer only a fire on an altar.

34–42 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Knowledge burns what was done

Summary

Knowledge burns what was done. Learn it by going to the teachers, by question, and by service. Even the worst doer crosses by the boat of knowledge. The fire of knowledge makes ashes of action. Cut the doubt in the heart with that knowledge and stand up. The section returns Arjuna to the bow by way of knowing, not by a new threat.
