Chapter 1

Arjuna-viṣāda (अर्जुन-विषाद)

The armies are named. Arjuna sees his own people and sits down.

Summary

Chapter 1 is Arjuna's collapse. The armies are named, the conches are blown, and he asks to look. He sees teachers and kin on both sides. His limbs fail, his mouth dries, and he sets the bow down. The chapter does not yet teach. It makes the grief the rest of the poem answers.

1–19 Dhṛtarāṣṭra (धृतराष्ट्र), Sañjaya (सञ्जय) · The two armies

Summary

Dhṛtarāṣṭra (धृतराष्ट्र) asks what happened. Sañjaya (सञ्जय) names the two armies, the chiefs, and the conches. The section stops before Arjuna lifts his eyes to the men he would have to kill. It is the roll of the battle, not yet the grief.

20–47 Sañjaya (सञ्जय), Arjuna (अर्जुन), श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · He sits down

Summary

Arjuna asks to be driven between the armies and looks. Teachers, fathers, and companions stand on the other side. Pity wrecks his limbs. He argues that killing them would stain the line, and he sits down, dropping the bow. The section is the refusal the next chapter answers.
