Chapter 12

Bhakti (भक्ति)

Who is dearest. The qualities of the one whose mind has been given.

Summary

Chapter 12 is bhakti, and it is the chapter the Nārada (नारद) sūtras (सूत्र) sit beside. Who is better, the one who worships the manifest or the one who worships the unmanifest? The answer is a ladder of practices, from fixing the mind, down to renouncing the fruit of action. The second half says who is dear. The list is a description of that person, not a set of tasks added on top.

1–12 Arjuna (अर्जुन), श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Which worship, and the ladder

Summary

Which worship, and the ladder. Worshippers of the manifest and worshippers of the unmanifest are compared. The unmanifest is harder for the embodied. Fix the mind on him.

12.1Arjuna (अर्जुन) said: Those devotees, always yoked, who thus worship you, and those also who worship the imperishable unmanifest — of them, which are the best knowers of yoga?12.2Those who set the mind on me and worship me, ever yoked, I hold as the best.12.3But those who worship the imperishable, the one that cannot be pointed out, the unmanifest, present everywhere, unthinkable, set like a peak, unmoving, fixed, are the people 12.4 follows to the end.12.4Having drawn in the whole host of the senses, even-minded everywhere, delighting in the welfare of all beings, they reach me alone.12.5Greater is the toil of those whose mind clings to the unmanifest, for the unmanifest goal is reached with pain by those who have a body.12.6Those who lay all actions down in me, each of them holding me as highest, and who worship me by a yoga with no other object, meditating, are the people 12.7 says he lifts.12.7For them I become, before long, the one who lifts them out of the ocean of death and of the wandering, Pārtha (पार्थ) — for those whose mind has been placed in me.12.8Set the mind on me alone. Settle the intellect in me. You will dwell in me.12.9If you are not able to fix the mind steadily in me, then by the yoga of practice seek to reach me, Dhanañjaya (धनञ्जय).12.10If you are unable even for practice, be one whose highest is action for me; even doing actions for my sake, you will reach the attainment.12.11If you are unable to do even this, then, taking refuge in my yoga, give up the fruit of every action, with the self held in check.12.12Knowledge is better than practice; meditation stands above knowledge; the giving up of the fruit of action stands above meditation; and right after that giving up comes peace.QuizFive questions on Which worship, and the ladder.
