14.1श्रीभगवान् said: I shall speak again the supreme knowledge, the highest of knowledges, knowing which all the sages have gone from here to the highest attainment.14.2Having resorted to this knowledge and come to a nature the same as mine, they are not born even at a creation, and at a dissolution they are not shaken.14.3The great Brahman (ब्रह्म) is my womb; in that I place the germ, and from that, Bhārata (भारत), comes the arising of all beings.14.4Whatever forms come to be in all wombs, son of Kuntī (कुन्ती), of those the great Brahman (ब्रह्म) is the womb, and I am the father who gives the seed.14.5Sattva, rajas, and tamas, born of nature, bind the imperishable embodied one.14.6Among them, sattva (सत्त्व), because it is without stain, makes light and is untroubled, and it binds by clinging to happiness and by clinging to knowledge, faultless one.14.7Know rajas (रजस्), son of Kuntī (कुन्ती), as passion in its nature and as the rising of thirst and clinging; it binds the embodied one by clinging to action.14.8But know tamas (तमस्) as born of ignorance, the deluder of every embodied one; it binds by negligence, by laziness, and by sleep, Bhārata (भारत).14.9sattva (सत्त्व) fastens one to happiness, and rajas (रजस्) to action, Bhārata (भारत); and tamas (तमस्), having covered knowledge, fastens one to negligence.14.10Having overpowered rajas (रजस्) and tamas (तमस्), sattva (सत्त्व) prevails, Bhārata (भारत); rajas (रजस्) prevails having overpowered sattva (सत्त्व) and tamas (तमस्); and tamas (तमस्) likewise, having overpowered sattva (सत्त्व) and rajas (रजस्).QuizFive questions on The three bind.

14.11When light, which is knowledge, arises in all the gates of this body, then one should know that sattva (सत्त्व) has grown strong.14.12Greed, activity, the undertaking of actions, unrest, and craving arise when rajas (रजस्) has grown strong, bull of the Bharatas.14.13Not-light and not-activity, negligence and delusion, arise when tamas (तमस्) has grown strong, joy of the Kurus.14.14When sattva (सत्त्व) has grown strong and the body-bearer goes to dissolution, then he attains the stainless worlds of those who know the highest.14.15Having gone to dissolution in rajas (रजस्), he is born among those who cling to action; and likewise, one dissolved in tamas (तमस्) is born in deluded wombs.14.16They say the fruit of action well done is of sattva (सत्त्व) and stainless; but the fruit of rajas (रजस्) is pain, and the fruit of tamas (तमस्) is ignorance.14.17From sattva (सत्त्व) knowledge is born, and from rajas (रजस्) greed; from tamas (तमस्) come negligence and delusion, and ignorance as well.14.18Those who stand in sattva (सत्त्व) go upward, those of rajas (रजस्) stay in the middle, and those of tamas (तमस्), standing in the conduct of the lowest strand, go downward.14.19When the seer sees no doer other than the strands, and knows what is higher than the strands, he attains my being.14.20Having crossed these three guṇas (गुण), which arise with the body, he is freed from birth, death, old age, and pain.QuizFive questions on How they show, and how they are crossed.

21–27 Arjuna (अर्जुन), श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · The one who has crossed
