Chapter 5

Karma-sannyāsa (कर्म-सन्न्यास)

Renunciation and action meet in the person who is not the doer.

Summary

Chapter 5 puts renunciation and action together. The yoga of action is not worse than the yoga of renunciation for one who must still act. The one who sees that nature acts, and that he is not the doer, is the renouncer these verses mean. The close is a picture of the person who is glad in the self.

1–12 Arjuna (अर्जुन), श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Which of the two is better

Summary

Which of the two is better? Arjuna asks again. Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the high good, and of the two the yoga of action is preferred for him. The renouncer and the yogin of action are one when both drop the fruit. The section settles the apparent quarrel of chapters 2 and 3.

5.1Arjuna (अर्जुन) said: Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण), you praise the renunciation of actions and again you praise yoga, so tell me which one of these two is better, as a sure thing.5.2Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest. Of the two, the yoga of action is better.5.3He is to be known as a constant renouncer who does not hate and does not long, for the man free of the pairs, mighty-armed, is easily released from bondage.5.4Children say that sāṅkhya and yoga are separate, the learned do not say it, and even a man rightly settled in one obtains the fruit of both.5.5The place reached by the men of sāṅkhya is also reached by the men of yoga, and the one who sees sāṅkhya and yoga as one is the one who sees.5.6But renunciation is hard to reach without yoga, mighty-armed, while the sage yoked to yoga reaches brahman before long.5.7The man yoked to yoga, self clean, self conquered, senses conquered, his self become the self of all beings, is not stained even while he is doing.5.8The knower, yoked, thinks "I do nothing at all," while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling.5.9And while speaking, letting go, grasping, opening the eyes and closing them, he holds this: the senses move among the objects of the senses.5.10Who acts having placed his actions in brahman and having left attachment is not stained by evil, as a lotus leaf is not stained by water.5.11Yogins do action with the body, the mind, the intellect, and the senses alone, having left attachment, for the cleansing of the self.5.12The yoked one, having left the fruit of action, reaches a lasting peace, and the unyoked one, clinging to the fruit under the working of desire, is bound.QuizFive questions on Which of the two is better.

13–29 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · The one who is not the doer

Summary

The one who is not the doer. The lord of the body, renouncing, sits happy in the city of nine gates. Nature, not the self, acts. Knowledge is covered by ignorance, and when that covering goes the self shines. The person who is the same to all is glad in the welfare of every being. The section ends on knowing Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) as the friend of all beings, which brings peace.

5.13The embodied one, master of himself, having laid down all actions with the mind, sits at ease in the nine-gated city, not doing at all and not causing action to be done.5.14The lord does not create doership for people, nor their actions, nor the joining of an action to its fruit, but nature proceeds.5.15The pervading one takes no one's evil and no one's good deed, while knowledge is covered by ignorance, and by that covering born beings are confused.5.16But for those whose ignorance of the self is destroyed by knowledge, their knowledge, like the sun, lights up that highest.5.17Those whose intellect, self, stance, and last resort are That go to the not-returning, their stains shaken off by knowledge.5.18The wise see the same in a learned brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-cooker.5.19Here itself the round of birth is conquered by those whose mind stands in evenness, for brahman is flawless and even, and therefore they stand in brahman.5.20He should not rejoice having got the pleasant, nor be shaken having got the unpleasant: the man of steady intellect, unbewildered, the knower of brahman, standing in brahman.5.21The man whose self is unattached to outer contacts finds the happiness that is in the self, and he, his self yoked in the yoga of brahman, reaches imperishable happiness.5.22For the enjoyments born of contact are only wombs of suffering, they have a beginning and an end, son of Kuntī (कुन्ती), and the wise one does not delight in them.5.23Who is able, here itself, before release from the body, to bear the surge sprung from desire and anger — he is the yoked man, he is the happy man.5.24The yogin whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, and whose light is within, having become brahman, reaches the brahman-quenching.5.25The seers whose stains are worn away obtain the brahman-quenching, their double mind cut, their selves held, delighting in the welfare of all beings.5.26For the strivers separated from desire and anger, mind held, self known, the brahman-quenching is present on every side.5.27The outer contacts are set outside, the eye is placed between the two brows, and the two breaths that move inside the nose are made equal.5.28The sage whose senses, mind, and intellect are held, whose resort is release, and from whom desire, fear, and anger have gone — he is always already released.5.29Having known me as the enjoyer of sacrifices and austerities, the great lord of all worlds, and the friend of all beings, he reaches peace.QuizFive questions on The one who is not the doer.
