Chapter 16

Daivāsura-sampad (दैवासुर-सम्पद्)

The divine endowment and the demonic. Three gates of hell.

Summary

Chapter 16 is two endowments. The divine is fearlessness, purity, steadiness in knowledge, and the rest of that list. The demonic is ostentation, pride, and a hunger that never says enough. Three gates of hell are desire, anger, and greed. The chapter sends the hearer to scripture as the measure of what to do, after the picture of the one who throws scripture off.

16.7Demonic people do not know engaging or withdrawal, and purity is not in them, nor right conduct, nor truth.16.8They say the world is without truth, without a foundation, and without a lord, arisen by mutual union, and, what else, caused by desire.16.9Holding to this view, those of lost self and small understanding come forth, fierce in their deeds and hostile, for the ruin of the world.16.10Resorting to insatiable desire, filled with hypocrisy, pride, and intoxication, they seize false holdings out of delusion and proceed, their vows impure.16.11They give themselves to immeasurable care that ends only at the dissolution, holding enjoyment of desire as the highest, resolved that this much is all.16.12Bound by hundreds of snares of hope, given over to desire and anger, they strive by unjust means to heap up wealth for the enjoyment of desires.16.13"This has been gained by me today, this wish I shall obtain, this is mine, and this wealth too shall be mine again."16.14"That enemy has been slain by me, and I shall slay others too; I am the lord, I am the enjoyer, I am successful, strong, and happy."16.15Rich and high-born, with no one equal to them, they will sacrifice, give, and rejoice, and thus they are deluded by ignorance.16.16Bewildered by many thoughts, wrapped in the net of delusion, attached to enjoyments of desire, they fall into an unclean hell.16.17Self-honored, stiff, filled with the intoxication of wealth and pride, they sacrifice with sacrifices that are only a name, in hypocrisy, not according to rule.16.18Resorting to ego, force, arrogance, desire, and anger, the fault-finders hate me in their own bodies and in the bodies of others.16.19Those haters, cruel, lowest of men, and inauspicious, I hurl continually, in the rounds of birth, into demonic wombs alone.16.20The deluded, having entered a demonic womb birth after birth and not reaching me, then go, son of Kuntī (कुन्ती), to the lowest course.QuizFive questions on The demonic mind.

21–24 श्रीभगवान् Śrī Bhagavān · Three gates

Summary

Three gates. Desire, anger, and greed destroy the self. One who is freed from these three gates does what is good for him and goes to the supreme goal. Scripture is the measure of what to do and what not to do. The one who throws that measure off does not reach perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.
