Quiz · 2.39–2.53

The buddhi, and the right to the act

Cover the answer. Read the Devanagari of the verse before you open it.

Chapter 2

1

In 2.48, what number is siddhyasiddhyoḥ (सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः), and which two words share that ending?

Answer

Dual. siddhi (सिद्धि) and asiddhi (असिद्धि), success and failure, are one pair. An i (इ)-stem pair wears --yoḥ (योः). With samaḥ (समः), "the same," the locative dual is the reading: even in the two.

2

In 2.47, saṅgaḥ (सङ्गः) stands before astu (अस्तु), and astu (अस्तु) stands before akarmaṇi (अकर्मणि). What is recited, and which two joins make it?

Answer

saṅgo 'stvakarmaṇi (सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि). अः + अ aḥ + a becomes o (ओ), and the a (अ) of astu (अस्तु) drops, leaving the avagraha. Then उ + अ u + a inside अस्तु + अकर्मणि astu + akarmaṇi becomes व v, so the rest is one run, 'stvakarmaṇi (ऽस्त्वकर्मणि).

3

Say 2.47 in one English sentence.

Answer

Your right is to the action alone, never to the fruits; do not become one whose motive is the fruit of the action, and do not let your clinging be to not acting.

4

2.39 opens this stretch and 2.53 closes it. What has already been declared, what is he told to hear, and what does Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) say arrives when the buddhi stands unmoving?

Answer

The buddhi in sāṅkhya (साङ्ख्य) has already been declared. He is told to hear this buddhi in yoga (योग), and when it stands unmoving and unwavering in samādhi (समाधि), he reaches yoga (योग). Arjuna (अर्जुन) is the man addressed, and he does not speak. The right, the evenness, and the skill are all inside Kṛṣṇa's (कृष्ण) speech.

5

Cover the English. Which three sentences show you have 2.39–2.53? Which word fails the sitting if you move it off the act and onto the fruit?

Answer

karmaṇi eva adhikāraḥ te (कर्मणि एव अधिकारः ते). samatvaṃ yogaḥ ucyate (समत्वं योगः उच्यते). yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam (योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्). The word is adhikāraḥ (अधिकारः). It sits in karmaṇi (कर्मणि). If it moves onto the fruit, the stretch is gone.
