Arjuna asks for the splendors

Cover the answer. Read the Devanagari of the verse before you open it.

Chapter 10

1

In 10.17, what kind of form is cintyaḥ (चिन्त्यः), and what does cintyo 'si (चिन्त्योऽसि) say?

Answer

cintyaḥ (चिन्त्यः) is a gerundive, "to be thought of, to be meditated on." With asi (असि) it says "you are to be meditated on." The --ya- (य-) marks what is to be done.

2

me (मे) stands in front of amṛtam (अमृतम्) in 10.18. What is recited, and which sandhi makes it?

Answer

me 'mṛtam (मेऽमृतम्). e (ए) + a (अ) keeps the e (ए) and marks the lost a (अ) with ऽ.

3

What does 10.18 ask, in one sentence?

Answer

Tell again at length the yoga and the splendor of yourself, for I, hearing the nectar, have no satiety.

4

Where do 10.12–10.18 sit in the talk between Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण)?

Answer

Arjuna speaks. He accepts what Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) has said: the sages say it, he himself says it, and Arjuna holds it true. Arjuna says that Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) knows himself by himself. Then he asks to be told the splendors, and in which bhāvāḥ (भावाः) the lord is to be meditated on. He asks again, because hearing the nectar has not sated him.

5

Say the question in 10.17 that the list will answer. Which failure shows he asked for one form only?

Answer

keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo 'si (केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि). The doubled keṣu (केषु) asks "in which, and in which." One form will not do.
