Chapter 13

1

In 13.8, what is the --tva (त्व) on amānitvam (अमानित्वम्) doing?

Answer

It makes an abstract noun, "the state of." amānitvam (अमानित्वम्) is the state of not looking for honor. The a- (अ-) at the front is the negative prefix. adambhitvam (अदम्भित्वम्) is built the same way.

2

ataḥ (अतः) stands in front of anyathā (अन्यथा) in 13.12. What is recited, and which sandhi makes it?

Answer

ato 'nyathā (अतोऽन्यथा). aḥ (अः) meets a (अ): the two become o (ओ), and the dropped a (अ) is written ऽ, the avagraha.

3

What does 13.14 say, in one sentence?

Answer

That has hands and feet everywhere, eyes and heads and mouths everywhere, and hearing everywhere, and having covered all it stands in the world.

4

Where do 13.8–13.19 sit in the talk between Arjuna (अर्जुन) and Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण)?

Answer

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is speaking. From 13.8 through 13.12, jñānam (ज्ञानम्) is a list of qualities: humility, absence of display, non-harm, patience, straightness, and, in 13.10, evenness of mind when the wanted and the unwanted arise. 13.12 declares that list to be knowledge, and what is otherwise than this to be ignorance. At 13.13 he turns to what is to be known. It has hands and feet everywhere, and in 13.15 it is nirguṇam (निर्गुणम्), free of the guṇa (गुण)s. 13.19 closes the three: the field, knowledge, and what is to be known. His devotee, having discerned this, comes to his state.

5

Say the kind of thing jñānam (ज्ञानम्) is in this stretch, then the hands and feet of 13.14. Which word fails the sitting if the hands stay on one body?

Answer

amānitvam (अमानित्वम्), ahiṃsā (अहिंसा), and samacittatvam (समचित्तत्वम्) are qualities. sarvataḥ pāṇi-pādam (सर्वतः पाणि-पादम्) puts hands and feet everywhere. If sarvataḥ (सर्वतः) drops out, stay here.
