Quiz · 18.67–18.78

The bow comes back up

Cover the answer. Read the Devanagari of the verse before you open it.

Chapter 18

1

In 18.73, what form is kariṣye (करिष्ये), and what will he do?

Answer

Future, first person singular, middle, of kṛ (कृ). He will do vacanam tava (वचनम् तव), your word. The same verse says sthitaḥ asmi (स्थितः अस्मि), I stand, with the doubt gone.

2

In 18.73, sthitaḥ (स्थितः) meets asmi (अस्मि). What is recited, and which sandhi makes it?

Answer

sthito 'smi (स्थितोऽस्मि). अः + अ aḥ + a becomes o (ओ), and the a (अ) of asmi (अस्मि) is dropped. The mark ऽ is that dropped a (अ).

3

Say what 18.73 means, in one sentence.

Answer

Arjuna (अर्जुन) said: Delusion is destroyed, and by your grace I have gained memory, O Acyuta (अच्युत); I stand with my doubt gone, and I shall do your word.

4

Where does 18.67–18.78 sit in the talk between Arjuna (अर्जुन) and Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण)?

Answer

The most secret word has been said. This teaching is not for the one who does not want it: not for one without austerity, without devotion, without the wish to hear, or for one who finds fault. Who declares it among his devotees comes to him. Arjuna's (अर्जुन) delusion is destroyed. He stands, and he will do the word (18.73). That is the answer to 1.47, where he sat down and let the bow fall. Sañjaya (सञ्जय) reports the dialogue and the form. Where Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is, lord of yoga, and where Arjuna (अर्जुन) is, the bow-bearer, there is fortune (18.78). Sañjaya's (सञ्जय) last verse is the report Dhṛtarāṣṭra (धृतराष्ट्र) asked for in 1.1.

5

Say 18.78. Which name fails the sitting if the bow is still on the ground?

Answer

yatra yoga-īśvaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ (यत्र योग-ईश्वरः कृष्णः), yatra pārthaḥ dhanur-dharaḥ (यत्र पार्थः धनुर्-धरः), tatra śrīḥ vijayaḥ bhūtiḥ dhruvā nītiḥ (तत्र श्रीः विजयः भूतिः ध्रुवा नीतिः), matiḥ mama (मतिः मम). If dhanur-dharaḥ (धनुर्-धरः) is a man who has dropped the bow, stay.
