17.3

सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत ।
श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः ॥

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati bhārata
śraddhāmayo 'yam puruṣo yo yacchraddhaḥ sa eva saḥ

śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is still speaking. No new uvāca (उवाच).

The verse

The faith of every person is shaped to the being he is, Bhārata (भारत), and this person is made of faith, so that whoever has which faith, he is that.

Where it sits

17.2 said the faith is born of one's own nature. This verse says the person and the faith are the same shape. The question in 17.1, which strand, is answered by looking at the faith he already has. What he worships, in the next verse, will show it.

The phrases

sattvānurūpā sarvasya śraddhā bhavati (सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति) says how the three kinds of 17.2 get onto a person. The faith of every one is shaped to the being he is. sattva (सत्त्व) here is that being, the same word as the clear strand, and the next verse will use all three strands. The shape follows the person.

śraddhāmayaḥ ayam puruṣaḥ (श्रद्धामयः अयम् पुरुषः) is the person, said over again as a thing made of faith. The man is not standing beside his faith. He is made of it.

yaḥ yat-śraddhaḥ saḥ eva saḥ (यः यत्-श्रद्धः सः एव सः) is the rule. Who has which faith, he is that. The second saḥ (सः) is the faith, not a second man.

Sanskrit in this line

श्रद्धामयः + अयम् śraddhāmayaḥ + ayam is recited śraddhāmayo 'yam (श्रद्धामयोऽयम्). aḥ (अः) before short a (अ) becomes o (ओ), and the a (अ) of ayam (अयम्) drops. The ऽ marks that dropped a (अ). The period in a romanized line is the same mark, śraddhāmayo 'yam (श्रद्धामयोऽयम्). The split still begins the second word with a (अ).

Say it back

The person made of faith, then the rule with two saḥ (सः). If the second saḥ (सः) is another man, the line has not closed. He is the faith he has.
