1.10
Tattvārtha Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.10
तत् प्रमाणे
tat pramāṇe
The line
That knowledge is two means of knowing.
नेपालीमा
त्यो ज्ञान दुई जान्ने साधन हो।
Where it sits
1.6 had already said learning is by pramāṇa (प्रमाण) and by naya (नय). 1.10 returns to pramāṇa (प्रमाण) and says the five knowledges make two of them. The next two lines divide the five.
Split: tat (तत्) + pramāṇe (प्रमाणे)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tat (तत्) | nominative singular, neuter | that. The five kinds of jñāna (ज्ञान) from 1.9. |
| pramāṇe (प्रमाणे) | nominative dual, neuter | two pramāṇas (प्रमाण). The dual ending -e (-ए) is the whole news of the line. |
The phrases
tat (तत्) is singular, gathering the five into one topic. pramāṇe (प्रमाणे) is dual: they fall into two means of knowing.
The line does not name the two. 1.11 and 1.12 do. This is anuvṛtti (अनुवृत्ति) waiting one line.
Sanskrit in this line
The dual is easy to miss because -e (-ए) looks like a locative singular. Here pramāṇe (प्रमाणे) agrees with a count of two, and the next lines spell the two out. Read it as dual.
