Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.22

vyatirekāt
The line
Because action is found apart from the arising of a substance.
नेपालीमा
किनकि कर्म द्रव्यको उत्पत्तिबाट अलग पाइन्छ।
Where it sits
The claim being reasoned is 1.1.21. Nothing new is named. When a sūtra (सूत्र) is a single ablative, it is a reason for the line before.
Split: vyatirekāt (व्यतिरेकात्)

The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| vyatirekāt (व्यतिरेकात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of exclusion. vyatireka is being apart, the case where one thing is there and the other is not. |
The phrases
One word, an ablative of reason. Why is action not the cause of a substance? Because we find the effect where that action is excluded, and we find the action where that effect is not the thing produced.
Substances produce a further substance when they are conjoined. The action is not the factor you cannot remove. The ablative says 'because of that exclusion.' It does not spell the cases out.
Sanskrit in this line
An ablative of an abstract is 'because,' the same tool as Vedānta (वेदान्त)'s -tvāt (-त्वात्). vyatireka is vi-ati-ric, to exceed, to be left out.
