1.1.25
Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.25
द्वित्वप्रभृतयः संख्याः पृथक्त्वसंयोगविभागाश् च
dvitvaprabhṛtayaḥ saṃkhyāḥ pṛthaktvasaṃyogavibhāgāś ca
The line
Numbers beginning with two, and separateness, conjunction, and disjunction, are effects of more than one thing.
नेपालीमा
दुईदेखि सुरु हुने सङ्ख्या, पृथक्त्व, संयोग र विभाग एकभन्दा बढी कुराका कार्य हुन्।
Where it sits
kāryam (कार्यम्) from the causal survey is still in force. 1.1.26 says an action is not this kind of effect. 1.1.27 then says the effect of conjunctions is a substance.
Split: dvitva-prabhṛtayaḥ (द्वित्व-प्रभृतयः) + saṃkhyāḥ (संख्याः) + pṛthaktva-saṃyoga-vibhāgāḥ (पृथक्त्व-संयोग-विभागाः) + ca (च)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| dvitva-prabhṛtayaḥ (द्वित्व-प्रभृतयः) | nominative plural, feminine | duality and what begins from it. prabhṛti (प्रभृति) means 'beginning with.' Two, three, and the numbers after. |
| saṃkhyāḥ (संख्याः) | nominative plural, feminine | numbers. The qualities named in 1.1.6. |
| pṛthaktva-saṃyoga-vibhāgāḥ (पृथक्त्व-संयोग-विभागाः) | nominative plural, masculine | separateness, conjunction, and disjunction. |
| ca (च) | indeclinable | and. |
The phrases
The line only names them. The verb is the one the passage has been using: these are effects. They are effects that belong to more than one substance. Duality is not in one atom by itself. Conjunction is of two. Separateness and disjunction likewise.
Unity can belong to one thing. The numbers that start at two cannot. That is why the list begins at dvitva and not at ekatva.
Sanskrit in this line
The pāṭha (पाठ) splits pṛthaktva (पृथक्त्व), saṃyoga (संयोग), and vibhāga (विभाग) with spaces. They are one list, one ending on vibhāgāḥ (विभागाः), with ca. prabhṛti (प्रभृति) at the end of a compound means 'and the rest, starting from the first member.'
Say it back
Why does the list start at two?
Next
1.1.26. There is no action that is a joint effect, because an action inheres in one substance.
