1.1.24
Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.24
गुणवैधर्म्यान् न कर्मणां कर्म
guṇavaidharmyān na karmaṇāṃ karma
The line
Because action is unlike quality, there is no action produced by actions.
नेपालीमा
कर्म गुणजस्तो नभएकाले कर्महरूले उत्पन्न गरेको कर्म हुँदैन।
Where it sits
1.1.11 said the thing is not found. This line gives the reason, by contrast with 1.1.10. The survey of common causes and common effects can now name the products that do come from more than one thing. That is 1.1.25.
Split: guṇa-vaidharmyāt (गुण-वैधर्म्यात्) + na (न) + karmaṇām (कर्मणाम्) + karma (कर्म)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| guṇa-vaidharmyāt (गुण-वैधर्म्यात्) | ablative singular, neuter | because of unlikeness to quality. vaidharmya is the absence of a shared feature, the pair of sādharmya (साधर्म्य) in 1.1.4. |
| na (न) | indeclinable | not. |
| karmaṇām (कर्मणाम्) | genitive plural, neuter | of actions. |
| karma (कर्म) | nominative singular, neuter | an action. The effect. |
The phrases
Qualities produce qualities. Actions are unlike qualities in that respect, and so actions do not produce an action. The ablative is the reason. The rest restates 1.1.11.
kāryam (कार्यम्) is the unspoken predicate: an action is not the effect of actions.
Sanskrit in this line
vaidharmya is the opposite of sādharmya (साधर्म्य). The ablative again means because. karmaṇām (कर्मणाम्) karma (कर्म) is 'an action of actions,' here 'an action from actions.'
