1.1.29
Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.29
गुरुत्वप्रयत्नसंयोगानामुत्क्षेपणम्
gurutvaprayatnasaṃyogānām utkṣepaṇam
The line
Throwing upward is the effect of weight, effort, and conjunction.
नेपालीमा
माथि फाल्नु गुरुत्व, प्रयत्न र संयोगको कार्य हो।
Where it sits
kāryam (कार्यम्) is still the relation: the genitives are causes, utkṣepaṇam (उत्क्षेपणम्) is the effect. 1.1.7 defined the action. This line gives its causes. Adhyāya (अध्याय) 5 is where motion is examined. This is only the announcement.
Split: gurutva-prayatna-saṃyogānām (गुरुत्व-प्रयत्न-संयोगानाम्) + utkṣepaṇam (उत्क्षेपणम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| gurutva-prayatna-saṃyogānām (गुरुत्व-प्रयत्न-संयोगानाम्) | genitive plural | of weight, effort, and conjunction. |
| utkṣepaṇam (उत्क्षेपणम्) | nominative singular, neuter | throwing upward. The action named first in 1.1.7. |
The phrases
Weight pulls. Effort throws. Conjunction connects the body that makes the effort with the thing thrown. From those three, the upward throw.
gurutva, weight, was not in the seventeen of 1.1.6. The line uses it anyway, as a cause of motion. The later list of qualities is catching up with a cause Kaṇāda (कणाद) already needs. The sitting does not pretend it was in 1.1.6.
Sanskrit in this line
A dvandva of three wears one ending, on saṃyoga (संयोग). The genitive plural is 'from these, as causes.'
Say it back
Three causes of one action. Which of them was missing from 1.1.6?
