1.2.13
Vaiśeṣika Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.13
तथा गुणेषु भावाद् गुणत्वमुक्तम्
tathā guṇeṣu bhāvād guṇatvam uktam
The line
In the same way, qualityness is declared because of its presence in qualities.
नेपालीमा
त्यसै गरी गुणत्व गुणहरूमा रहेकाले भनिन्छ।
Where it sits
1.2.11 used an instrumental, 'by occurrence in many substances.' This line uses a locative and an ablative, 'in qualities, because of presence.' The claim is the same kind. 1.2.14 is the refrain, with guṇatva (गुणत्व) as the subject.
Split: tathā (तथा) + guṇeṣu (गुणेषु) + bhāvāt (भावात्) + guṇatvam (गुणत्वम्) + uktam (उक्तम्)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tathā (तथा) | indeclinable | in the same way. Copy the pattern of 1.2.11. |
| guṇeṣu (गुणेषु) | locative plural, masculine | in qualities. |
| bhāvāt (भावात्) | ablative singular, masculine | because of its presence. |
| guṇatvam (गुणत्वम्) | nominative singular, neuter | qualityness. |
| uktam (उक्तम्) | nominative singular, neuter | is declared. |
The phrases
As substanceness was declared from many substances, qualityness is declared from its presence in qualities. Color, number, and conjunction all have it.
tathā (तथा) tells you to bring the shape, not to bring dravyatva.
Sanskrit in this line
tathā (तथा) plus a new locative is a new subject in an old frame. uktam again means the definition is given, not 'see above.'
