2.22

वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि ।
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णान्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही ॥

vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro 'parāṇi
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāny anyāni saṃyāti navāni dehī

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) continues, and this is the picture of 2.13 said with clothes. Meter: upajāti (उपजाति). Three quarters have eleven syllables, triṣṭubh (त्रिष्टुभ्). The third has twelve, jagatī (जगती): tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāni (तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णानि). The recited line joins जीर्णानि + अन्यानि jīrṇāni + anyāni as jīrṇāny anyāni (जीर्णान्यन्यानि), so the a (अ) is not its own syllable on the page.

The verse

As a man, having left worn-out clothes, takes other new ones, so the embodied one, having left worn-out bodies, goes on to other new ones.

नेपालीमा

जसरी मानिसले थोत्रा लुगा छाडेर अर्का नयाँ लिन्छ, त्यसरी देहधारीले थोत्रा शरीर छाडेर अर्का नयाँ शरीरमा जान्छ।

Where it sits

Another body is a change of clothes, and the one who changes them is dehī (देही), so grief for the worn-out body is grief for a cloth that has been left. The hell told of the family in chapter 1 is still waiting.

Split: वासांसि + जीर्णानि + यथा + विहाय + नवानि + गृह्णाति + नरः + अपराणि + तथा + शरीराणि + विहाय + जीर्णानि + अन्यानि + संयाति + नवानि + देही

vāsāṃsi + jīrṇāni + yathā + vihāya + navāni + gṛhṇāti + naraḥ + aparāṇi + tathā + śarīrāṇi + vihāya + jīrṇāni + anyāni + saṃyāti + navāni + dehī

The phrases

vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naraḥ aparāṇi (वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरः अपराणि) is the clothes. As a man, having left worn-out clothes, takes other new ones. नरः + अपराणि naraḥ + aparāṇi is naro 'parāṇi (नरोऽपराणि).

tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāni anyāni saṃyāti navāni dehī (तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णानि अन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही) is the bodies, in the same order. So the embodied one, having left worn-out bodies, goes on to other new ones. जीर्णानि + अन्यानि jīrṇāni + anyāni is jīrṇāny anyāni (जीर्णान्यन्यानि): i (इ) before a vowel becomes y (य्). The break in a printed line is not a hyphen inside a compound. dehī (देही) is the nominative of dehin (देहिन्). It is not deha (देह), the body.

Sanskrit in this line

yathā (यथा) and tathā (तथा) lock the simile. Match the pairs and do not cross them. vāsāṃsi (वासांसि) answers śarīrāṇi (शरीराणि). naraḥ (नरः) answers dehī (देही). jīrṇa (जीर्ण) is what is left, nava (नव) is what is taken, and vihāya (विहाय) is the leaving in both halves. dehī (देही) is nominative singular of dehin (देहिन्). The genitive dehinaḥ (देहिनः) was 2.13. Same person, different case, and the case here is the subject of saṃyāti (संयाति).

Say it back

What is left, what is taken, and who does it in each half. dehī (देही), not the body.
