2.44

भोगैश्वर्यप्रसक्तानां तयापहृतचेतसाम् ।
व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिः समाधौ न विधीयते ॥

bhogaiśvaryaprasaktānāṃ tayāpahṛtacetasām
vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is speaking.

The verse

For those attached to enjoyment and lordship, whose minds that speech has carried off, the buddhi of resolve is not established in samādhi (समाधि).

नेपालीमा

भोग र आधिपत्यमा आसक्त भएका, जसका मन त्यो वचनले लगिसकेका छन्, तिनीहरूमा निश्चयको बुद्धि समाधिमा स्थापित हुँदैन।

Where it sits

The many-branched speech takes the mind, and the one buddhi cannot stand in a mind that has been taken. He is about to tell Arjuna (अर्जुन) to step past the scope of that speech.

The phrases

bhogaiśvaryaprasaktānām (भोगैश्वर्यप्रसक्तानाम्) is whose case this is. Men attached to the same pair 2.43 aimed at, enjoyment and lordship. The ending is genitive plural. The buddhi is not theirs.

tayā apahṛtacetasām (तया अपहृतचेतसाम्) says how they got there. tayā (तया) is "by that," the flowered speech. It has carried off their minds. आ + अ ā + a joins tayā (तया) and apahṛta (अपहृत) into tayāpahṛta (तयापहृत). The two genitives are the same people, named twice.

vyavasāyātmikā buddhiḥ samādhau na vidhīyate (व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिः समाधौ न विधीयते) is the result. The buddhi of resolve is not set in samādhi (समाधि). This is the ekā (एका) of 2.41, refused a place.

Sanskrit in this line

vidhīyate (विधीयते) is passive. Nobody in the verse is setting the buddhi. The buddhi is the subject, and na (न) says the setting does not happen. The genitives are not the doers. They are the people in whom it fails. "Is not established for them" is the genitive plus the passive together.

Say it back

Whose mind has been carried off, and which buddhi does not get established. If samādhau (समाधौ) comes out as "in heaven," stay here.
