इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते ॥

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran
indriyārthān vimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate

śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is speaking, and he names the man who looks as if he had stopped.

The verse

He who sits having restrained the organs of action, while remembering the sense-objects with the mind, deluded in himself, is called a man of false conduct.

नेपालीमा

जसले कर्मका इन्द्रिय रोकेर बस्छ, तर मनले विषय सम्झिरहन्छ, आफैँमा मोहित, त्यसलाई झुटो आचरणको मानिस भनिन्छ।

Where it sits

This is the counterfeit of the stance of knowledge: the organs have stopped, and the want has not. 3.7 is the man who is not this one.

The phrases

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste (कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते) is the pose. Who sits, having held in the organs of action. यः + आस्ते yaḥ + āste is recited ya āste (य आस्ते). aḥ (अः) before ā (आ) disappears into that ā (आ).

मनसा स्मरन् इन्द्रियार्थान् manasā smaran indriyārthān is what the pose does not stop. With the mind he goes on remembering the objects. The organs are quiet. The mind is not.

vimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate (विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते) is the name he gets. Deluded in himself, he is called a man whose conduct is false. सः + उच्यते saḥ + ucyate stays sa ucyate (स उच्यते), with the visarga gone and a gap before the vowel.

Sanskrit in this line

यः + आस्ते yaḥ + āste is ya āste (य आस्ते). aḥ (अः) before ā (आ) does not become o (ओ). That o (ओ) is for अः + अ aḥ + a. Before a long ā (आ), the short a (अ) and the visarga are lost in the long vowel, and one ā (आ) remains.

Say it back

Describe the sitter, then give him the name the verse gives him. If mithyācāraḥ (मिथ्याचारः) softens into "a beginner," stay here.
