6.11

शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः ।
नात्युच्छ्रितं नातिनीचं चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ॥

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya sthiram āsanam ātmanaḥ
nātyucchritaṃ nātinīcaṃ cailājinakuśottaram

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking. The sentence he starts here finishes at āsīta (आसीत) in 6.14.

The verse

Having set up, in a clean place, his own firm seat, not too high and not too low, with cloth, hide, and kuśa grass laid one over the next.

नेपालीमा

सफा ठाउँमा, न धेरै अग्लो न धेरै होचो, कपडा, छाला र कुश घाँस एकमाथि अर्को ओछ्याएर, उसले आफ्नो स्थिर आसन बसालेको हुन्छ।

Where it sits

6.10 put him in a solitary place. This verse builds the seat. The body and the gaze come next, and he does not actually sit until 6.14.

The phrases

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya (शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य) is the first act, still unfinished. Having set it up in a clean place. स्थिरम् आसनम् आत्मनः sthiram āsanam ātmanaḥ is what he sets up: his own firm seat.

na ati-ucchritam na ati-nīcam (न अतिउच्छ्रितम् न अतिनीचम्) keeps the seat off both extremes. cailājinakuśottaram (चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम्) is the seat's build: cloth, hide, and kuśa (कुश) grass, each uttara (उत्तर), the next one above. There is no finite verb yet.

na ati (न अति) is recited nāti (नाति), twice. ati ucchritam (अति उच्छ्रितम्) is atyucchritam (अत्युच्छ्रितम्). caila ajina (चैल अजिन) is cailājina (चैलाजिन). kuśa uttaram (कुश उत्तरम्) is kuśottaram (कुशोत्तरम्).

Sanskrit in this line

pratiṣṭhāpya (प्रतिष्ठाप्य) is a gerund, "having set up," and it does not show person. The person will be the subject of āsīta (आसीत) in 6.14. The ending is --ya (य), not --tvā (त्वा), because the verb has prefixes, prati (प्रति) and the causative stem. 1.2 had the same choice, dṛṣṭvā (दृष्ट्वा) against upasaṅgamya (उपसङ्गम्य). ati (अति) in front of an adjective means "too."

Say it back

The place, the seat, and the two extremes he avoids. If uttaram (उत्तरम्) comes out as "a northern seat," stay here.
