श्रीभगवानुवाच
असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् ।
अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते ॥

śrībhagavān uvāca
asaṃśayaṃ mahābāho mano durnigrahaṃ calam
abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate

Śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is speaking again. He grants Arjuna's description, then gives the means.

The verse

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) said: Without doubt, mighty-armed one, the mind is hard to hold and it moves; but by practice, son of Kuntī, and by dispassion, it is grasped.

Where it sits

Arjuna compared the mind to the wind. The answer does not argue the comparison away. Practice and dispassion are the grasp. 6.36 will say for whom that grasp is possible.

The phrases

asaṃśayam (असंशयम्) concedes the point. मनो दुर्निग्रहम् चलम् mano durnigrahaṃ calam agrees with Arjuna: the mind is hard to hold, and it moves.

abhyāsena tu (अभ्यासेन तु) is the turn. But by practice. vairāgyeṇa ca (वैराग्येण च) is the second means. And by dispassion. gṛhyate (गृह्यते) says the mind is grasped. He does not say it is easy. He says it is grasped by these two.

manaḥ durnigraham (मनः दुर्निग्रहम्) is mano durnigraham (मनो दुर्निग्रहम्).

Sanskrit in this line

abhyāsena (अभ्यासेन) and vairāgyeṇa (वैराग्येण) are instrumental of means, "by." gṛhyate (गृह्यते) is passive, so the mind is the subject and the means stay instrumental. There is no person in the instrumental here. The next verse will put the person there. manaḥ (मनः) before the voiced d (द्) is mano (मनो).

Say it back

He agrees, and then the two means. If vairāgyeṇa (वैराग्येण) is left out, practice is only half of the answer.
