6.37

अर्जुन उवाच
अयतिः श्रद्धयोपेतो योगाच्चलितमानसः ।
अप्राप्य योगसंसिद्धिं कां गतिं कृष्ण गच्छति ॥

arjuna uvāca
ayatiḥ śraddhayopeto yogāc calitamānasaḥ
aprāpya yogasaṃsiddhiṃ kāṃ gatiṃ kṛṣṇa gacchati

Arjuna is speaking again.

The verse

Arjuna said: A man who does not strive, though he came with faith, whose mind has slipped from yoga, not having reached yoga's attainment — what path does he go, Kṛṣṇa?

Where it sits

6.36 made striving the condition. Arjuna asks about the failure. Faith was there. The mind left. The perfection was not reached. What becomes of him? He is not finished. 6.38 and 6.39 press the fear.

The phrases

ayatiḥ śraddhayā upetaḥ (अयतिः श्रद्धया उपेतः) is the man. He did not strive, but he came with faith. yogāt calitamānasaḥ (योगात् चलितमानसः) is what happened: his mind slipped from yoga.

aprāpya yogasaṃsiddhim (अप्राप्य योगसंसिद्धिम्) says he did not reach the attainment. kām gatim gacchati (काम् गतिम् गच्छति) is the question. What path does he go?

śraddhayā upetaḥ (श्रद्धया उपेतः) is śraddhayopetaḥ (श्रद्धयोपेतः). yogāt calita (योगात् चलित) is yogāc calita (योगाच्चलित), t (त्) plus c (च्). kām gatim (काम् गतिम्) is kāṃ gatim (कां गतिम्).

Sanskrit in this line

kām (काम्) is the feminine accusative of the interrogative, and it agrees with gatim (गतिम्). The question is not a bare kim (किम्), "what?" The gender is doing the agreement. aprāpya (अप्राप्य) is a negative gerund, "not having reached," with the same --ya (य) as any prefixed gerund. The negative sits on the gerund and does not need a separate na (न).

Say it back

The man, in three phrases, then the question. If śraddhayā (श्रद्धया) is dropped, he is only a failure, and Arjuna's pity for the faithful man is gone.
