मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय ।
मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥

mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya
mayi sarvam idaṃ protaṃ sūtre maṇigaṇā iva

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is speaking, to Arjuna (अर्जुन), whom he calls Dhanañjaya (धनञ्जय), winner of wealth.

The verse

There is nothing else higher than me, Dhanañjaya (धनञ्जय). All this is strung on me, as rows of jewels are strung on a thread.

नेपालीमा

मभन्दा अर्को माथिल्लो केही छैन, हे धनञ्जय। यो सबै ममा उनिएको छ, जसरी मणिका पङ्क्ति धागोमा उनिन्छन्।

Where it sits

The two natures and the origin have been named. This verse is the claim they were walking toward. Nothing stands above him, and the world is not beside him. It is threaded on him.

The phrases

मत्तः पर-तरम् न अन्यत् किञ्चित् अस्ति mattaḥ para-taram na anyat kiñcit asti says there is nothing else higher than him. The comparative para-taram (पर-तरम्) takes the ablative mattaḥ (मत्तः) as "than." न + अन्यत् na + anyat is recited nānyat (नान्यत्). किञ्चित् + अस्ति kiñcit + asti is kiñcid asti (किञ्चिदस्ति): t (त्) before a vowel is voiced to d (द्).

मयि सर्वम् इदम् प्रोतम् mayi sarvam idam protam is the image's claim, before the image. All this is strung on him.

sūtre maṇi-gaṇāḥ iva (सूत्रे मणि-गणाः इव) is the image. Jewels on a thread. The thread is not one more jewel. The visarga of gaṇāḥ (गणाः) drops before iva (इव): the recited words are maṇigaṇā iva (मणिगणा इव).

Sanskrit in this line

mattaḥ (मत्तः) is the ablative of aham (अहम्). With a comparative, the ablative answers "than," not "from a place." para-taram (पर-तरम्) is "higher." mattaḥ para-taram (मत्तः पर-तरम्) is "higher than me." न अन्यत् किञ्चित् अस्ति na anyat kiñcit asti denies that there is any such thing.

The ablative will mean "from" again at 7.12, mattaḥ (मत्तः) "from me." The ending is the same. The comparative is what makes this one "than."

Say it back

Say the denial, then the thread. If protam (प्रोतम्) comes out as "born from," stay here. The jewels are strung on the thread. They are not the thread's children.
