9.4

मया ततमिदं सर्वं
जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना ।
मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि
न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः ॥

mayā tatam idaṃ sarvaṃ jagad avyaktamūrtinā
matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣv avasthitaḥ

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking to Arjuna (अर्जुन).

The verse

By me, in a form that is not manifest, this whole world is spread; all beings stand in me, and I am not standing in them.

नेपालीमा

मबाट, अव्यक्त रूपमा, यो सारा संसार फैलिएको छ। सबै भूतहरू ममा रहन्छन्, र म तिनीहरूमा उभिएको छैन।

Where it sits

The secret of 9.1 gets its first shape. The world is his spreading, and the spreading does not set him down inside the beings. The next verse will refuse the easy half of this picture, and call the refusal a lordly yoga.

Split: मया + ततम् + इदम् + सर्वम् + जगत् + अव्यक्त-मूर्तिना + मत्-स्थानि + सर्व-भूतानि + न + च + अहम् + तेषु + अवस्थितः

The phrases

मया ततम् इदं सर्वं जगत् mayā tatam idaṃ sarvaṃ jagat says the whole moving world is stretched out by him. avyakta-mūrtinā (अव्यक्त-मूर्तिना) is the same "by me," a second instrumental: the form doing the spreading is not on display.

matsthāni sarvabhūtāni (मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि) puts every being in him. Their place is mat (मत्), "in me."

na ca aham teṣu avasthitaḥ (न च अहम् तेषु अवस्थितः) turns the picture around. He is not standing in them. Beings rest in him. He is not in them the way a thing sits in a place.

Sanskrit in this line

जगत् + अव्यक्त-मूर्तिना jagat + avyakta-mūrtinā is recited jagad avyaktamūrtinā (जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना). t (त्) before a (अ) becomes d (द्). Later in the same verse, तेषु + अवस्थितः teṣu + avasthitaḥ is teṣv avasthitaḥ (तेष्ववस्थितः): उ + अ u + a becomes va (व).

Say it back

Cover the English. Say where the beings stand, and where he does not stand. If mat-sthāni (मत्-स्थानि) and avasthitaḥ (अवस्थितः) are given the same place, stay here.
