9.5

न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि
पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ।
भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो
ममात्मा भूतभावनः ॥

na ca matsthāni bhūtāni paśya me yogam aiśvaram
bhūtabhṛn na ca bhūtastho mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking to Arjuna (अर्जुन). paśya (पश्य) tells him to look.

The verse

And beings do not stand in me — see my lordly yoga: my self bears beings, does not stand in beings, and brings beings into being.

Where it sits

9.4 put beings in him and kept him out of them. 9.5 says the first half is also too small, and points at the yoga that can bear both sentences. The wind in the next verse is the picture he offers for it.

Split: न + च + मत्-स्थानि + भूतानि + पश्य + मे + योगम् + ऐश्वरम् + भूत-भृत् + न + च + भूत-स्थः + मम + आत्मा + भूत-भावनः

na + ca + mat-sthāni + bhūtāni + paśya + me + yogam + aiśvaram + bhūta-bhṛt + na + ca + bhūta-sthaḥ + mama + ātmā + bhūta-bhāvanaḥ

The phrases

na ca matsthāni bhūtāni (न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि) takes back the easy reading of 9.4. Beings do not stand in him. He does not soften the clash. He says paśya (पश्य): see.

मे योगम् ऐश्वरम् me yogam aiśvaram is what there is to see. A lordly yoga, a holding-together that can say both lines.

bhūta-bhṛt na ca bhūta-sthaḥ (भूत-भृत् न च भूत-स्थः) is that holding, said of mama ātmā (मम आत्मा). His self bears beings, and his self is not standing in the beings. bhūta-bhāvanaḥ (भूत-भावनः) is the third name: he is the one who brings beings to be.

Sanskrit in this line

bhūta-bhṛt (भूत-भृत्) is a nominative with no visarga. The stem ends in a consonant, so the nominative is the stem itself. It stands in front of na (न) and is recited bhūtabhṛnna (भूतभृन्न): त् + न t + n becomes nna (न्न).

Say it back

Cover the English. Say the two lines about where beings stand, then the three names of the self. If you drop na ca matsthāni (न च मत्स्थानि) to make 9.4 comfortable, stay here.
