12.2

श्रीभगवानुवाच
मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ।
श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥

śrībhagavān uvāca
mayy āveśya mano ye māṃ nityayuktā upāsate
śraddhayā parayopetās te me yuktatamā matāḥ

śrībhagavān (श्रीभगवान्) is speaking: the n (न्) of bhagavān (भगवान्) joins uvāca (उवाच), so the line outside the meter is śrībhagavānuvāca (श्रीभगवानुवाच), and the speaker is Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) through 12.20.

The verse

श्रीभगवान् said: Those who worship me with the mind placed in me, always yoked, endowed with the highest trust — they are, in my view, the most yoked.

Where it sits

12.1 asked who the best knowers are. This verse answers with the worship aimed at him. yukta-tamāḥ (युक्त-तमाः) is his word for the yoga-vit-tamāḥ (योग-वित्-तमाः) Arjuna (अर्जुन) asked about. The unmanifest worship is still to be placed.

The phrases

mayi āveśya manaḥ ye māṃ nityayuktā upāsate (मयि आवेश्य मनः ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते) is his side of the comparison. Who, having placed the mind in me, worship me, always yoked. मयि + आवेश्य mayi + āveśya is mayyāveśya (मय्यावेश्य). nityayuktāḥ (नित्ययुक्ताः) before the vowel of upāsate (उपासते) loses its visarga: nityayuktā (नित्ययुक्ता).

śraddhayā parayā upetāḥ (श्रद्धया परया उपेताः) is how they come. Endowed with the highest trust. परया + उपेताः parayā + upetāḥ is parayopetāḥ (परयोपेताः), because आ + उ ā + u becomes o (ओ).

te me yuktatamā matāḥ (ते मे युक्ततमा मताः) is the answer. They, in my view, are the most yoked. parayopetāḥ te (परयोपेताः ते) is recited straight through as parayopetās te (परयोपेतास्ते): āḥ (आः) before t (त्) becomes ās (आस्).

Sanskrit in this line

āveśya (आवेश्य) is a gerund, "having placed." It does not show person. The persons are the ye (ये) of upāsate (उपासते). The ending is --ya (य) because ā-viś (आ-विश्) has a prefix, and the e (ए) in the stem is the causative: he causes the mind to enter. manaḥ (मनः) is the thing placed, accusative.

Say it back

Who worships, where the mind has been put, and who counts as most yoked. If yukta-tamāḥ (युक्त-तमाः) is said of the unmanifest worship, stay here.
