14.3

मम योनिर्महद् ब्रह्म
तस्मिन्गर्भं दधाम्यहम् ।
सम्भवः सर्वभूतानां
ततो भवति भारत ॥

mama yonir mahad brahma tasmin garbhaṃ dadhāmy aham
sambhavaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tato bhavati bhārata

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking, to Arjuna (अर्जुन).

The verse

The great Brahman (ब्रह्म) is my womb; in that I place the germ, and from that, Bhārata (भारत), comes the arising of all beings.

नेपालीमा

महान् ब्रह्म मेरो योनि हो, त्यसमा म गर्भ राख्छु, र त्यसबाट, हे भारत, सबै प्राणीको उत्पत्ति हुन्छ।

Where it sits

14.2 was the person who is not born with a world. This verse steps back and says how a being comes to be at all: a womb that is the great Brahman (ब्रह्म), and a germ that he places.

The phrases

mama yoniḥ mahat brahma (मम योनिः महत् ब्रह्म) names the womb. It is his, and it is the great Brahman (ब्रह्म). yoniḥ (योनिः) is feminine. mahat brahma (महत् ब्रह्म) is neuter. The two nominatives are one claim: the great Brahman (ब्रह्म) is my womb.

तस्मिन् गर्भम् दधामि अहम् tasmin garbhaṃ dadhāmi aham is what he does there. In that womb he places the germ. aham (अहम्) is the one who places it.

sambhavaḥ sarva-bhūtānām tataḥ bhavati (सम्भवः सर्व-भूतानाम् ततः भवति) is the result. From that comes the arising of all beings. tataḥ (ततः) points back at the womb and the germ together.

Sanskrit in this line

योनिः + महत् + ब्रह्म yoniḥ + mahat + brahma is recited yonir mahad brahma (योनिर्महद् ब्रह्म). iḥ (इः) before the voiced m (म्) becomes r (र्), so yoniḥ (योनिः) is heard as yonir (योनिर्). Then the t (त्) of mahat (महत्), before the voiced b (ब्) of brahma (ब्रह्म), becomes d (द्): mahad (महद्). Two changes, and both words are still the ones in the split.

Say it back

Cover the English. Say what the womb is, and who places the germ. If garbham (गर्भम्) is said of the beings, stay here. The germ is what he places. The beings arise from that.
