14.15

रजसि प्रलयं गत्वा
कर्मसङ्गिषु जायते ।
तथा प्रलीनस्तमसि
मूढयोनिषु जायते ॥

rajasi pralayaṃ gatvā karmasaṅgiṣu jāyate
tathā pralīnas tamasi mūḍhayoniṣu jāyate

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) is still speaking, to Arjuna (अर्जुन).

The verse

Having gone to dissolution in rajas (रजस्), he is born among those who cling to action; and likewise, one dissolved in tamas (तमस्) is born in deluded wombs.

Where it sits

14.14 sent the one who dies in sattva (सत्त्व) to stainless worlds, and this verse keeps the other two in birth: rajas (रजस्) among people of action, tamas (तमस्) in a deluded womb.

The phrases

rajasi pralayaṃ gatvā karma-saṅgiṣu jāyate (रजसि प्रलयं गत्वा कर्म-सङ्गिषु जायते) is the death in rajas (रजस्). Having gone to dissolution while in that strand, he is born among people who cling to action. The subject is still the body-bearer of 14.14. gatvā (गत्वा) borrows him.

tathā pralīnaḥ tamasi mūḍha-yoniṣu jāyate (तथा प्रलीनः तमसि मूढ-योनिषु जायते) is the death in tamas (तमस्). Likewise, one who has dissolved in that strand is born in deluded wombs. pralīnaḥ (प्रलीनः) is the subject this time, said out loud. tathā (तथा) means the pattern matches, not that the womb matches.

Sanskrit in this line

karma-saṅgiṣu (कर्म-सङ्गिषु) and mūḍha-yoniṣu (मूढ-योनिषु) are locative plurals, and they answer "born where." The ending --iṣu (इषु) is locative plural of an इ-stem, here saṅgin (सङ्गिन्) and yoni (योनि). rajasi (रजसि) and tamasi (तमसि) are a different locative. They say which strand he was in when he died. They are not the place he is born into.

Say it back

Cover the English. Give the two births. If mūḍha-yoniṣu (मूढ-योनिषु) is said of the death in rajas (रजस्), stay here.
