15.9

श्रोत्रं चक्षुः स्पर्शनं च
रसनं घ्राणमेव च ।
अधिष्ठाय मनश्चायं
विषयानुपसेवते ॥

śrotraṃ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṃ ca rasanaṃ ghrāṇam eva ca
adhiṣṭhāya manaś cāyaṃ viṣayān upasevate

Kṛṣṇa (कृष्ण) continues, and ayam (अयम्) is the same life, now using the senses it carries.

The verse

Presiding over hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell, and the mind, this one enjoys the objects of the senses.

नेपालीमा

सुन्ने, देख्ने, छुने, स्वाद र गन्ध, र मनमाथि बसेर यो इन्द्रियका विषय भोग्छ।

Where it sits

15.8 said the senses travel. This verse says what they are, and what the life does with them in a body. The next verse will say who sees that life and who does not.

The phrases

श्रोत्रम् चक्षुः स्पर्शनम् च रसनम् घ्राणम् एव च śrotram cakṣuḥ sparśanam ca rasanam ghrāṇam eva ca is the five. Ear, eye, touch, taste, and smell. These are the group of which the mind was called the sixth.

adhiṣṭhāya manaḥ ca ayam (अधिष्ठाय मनः च अयम्) is the stance. Presiding over them, and over the mind, this one acts. मनः + च manaḥ + ca is manaś ca (मनश् च), visarga before c (च्) becoming ś (श्), and च + अयम् ca + ayam is cāyam (चायम्).

विषयान् उपसेवते viṣayān upasevate is what he does with that stance. He enjoys the objects. विषयान् + उपसेवते viṣayān + upasevate is viṣayān upasevate (विषयानुपसेवते).

Sanskrit in this line

adhiṣṭhāya (अधिष्ठाय) has the prefix adhi (अधि), so the gerund ends in --ya (य), not --tvā (त्वा). gṛhītvā (गृहीत्वा) in 15.8 had no prefix and took --tvā (त्वा). Same job, "having done," and the front of the verb chooses the ending. sthā (स्था) with adhi (अधि) means to stand over, to preside.

Say it back

The five, the mind, and the enjoying. If the mind is counted as one of the five instead of the sixth, stay here.
