1.2

Tattvārtha Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2

तत्त्वार्थश्रद्धानं सम्यग्दर्शनम्

tattvārthaśraddhānaṃ samyagdarśanam

The line

Right seeing is trust in what the realities mean.

नेपालीमा

सही देख्नु तत्त्वहरूको अर्थमा विश्वास हो।

Where it sits

1.1 put samyagdarśana (सम्यग्दर्शन) first in the path. 1.2 tells you what that word is doing. 1.3 will say you can come to it by your own disposition or by learning.

Split: tattva-artha-śraddhānam (तत्त्व-अर्थ-श्रद्धानम्) + samyag-darśanam (सम्यग्-दर्शनम्)

Sanskrit, in depth

The words

WordGrammarSense
tattva-artha-śraddhānam (तत्त्व-अर्थ-श्रद्धानम्)nominative singular, neutertrust in the artha (अर्थ), the meaning, of the tattvas (तत्त्व), the realities. śraddhāna (श्रद्धान) is trust, taking something as so.
samyag-darśanam (सम्यग्-दर्शनम्)nominative singular, neuterright seeing. The same compound that opened 1.1, now defined.

The phrases

Again two nominatives and no verb. tattvārthaśraddhānam (तत्त्वार्थश्रद्धानम्) is what samyagdarśanam (सम्यग्दर्शनम्) is.

Śraddhā (श्रद्धा) here is not a feeling about a person. It is holding the tattvas (तत्त्व) to be what they are. 1.4 will name them. Until that line, the word tattva (तत्त्व) is waiting for its list.

Sanskrit in this line

artha (अर्थ) in this compound is the meaning, the thing the word tattva (तत्त्व) is about. Read the compound from śraddhānam (श्रद्धानम्): a trust, and the trust is of an artha (अर्थ), and the artha (अर्थ) is of the tattvas (तत्त्व).

Say it back

Say what śraddhāna (श्रद्धान) trusts, without looking.
