1.3
Tattvārtha Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.3
तन्निसर्गादधिगमाद् वा
tannisargād adhigamād vā
The line
Right seeing is from one's own disposition, or from learning.
नेपालीमा
सही देख्नु आफ्नै स्वभावबाट हुन्छ, वा सिकाइबाट।
Where it sits
1.2 defined right seeing. 1.3 says how it arises. 1.6 will come back to adhigama (अधिगम) and name the two tools of learning: pramāṇa (प्रमाण) and naya (नय).
Split: tat-nisargāt (तत्-निसर्गात्) + adhigamāt (अधिगमात्) + vā (वा)
Sanskrit, in depth
The words
| Word | Grammar | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| tat-nisargāt (तत्-निसर्गात्) | ablative singular, masculine | from one's own nisarga (निसर्ग), the disposition one already has. tat (तत्) is samyagdarśana (सम्यग्दर्शन), carried forward from 1.2. |
| adhigamāt (अधिगमात्) | ablative singular, masculine | from adhigama (अधिगम), getting there by study, by being taught. |
| vā (वा) | indeclinable | or. |
The phrases
The two ablatives are two sources. vā (वा) keeps them as alternatives. A person may have the trust without a lesson. A person may come to it by the lesson.
tat (तत्) is anuvṛtti (अनुवृत्ति). The line does not repeat samyagdarśanam (सम्यग्दर्शनम्). The tat (तत्) at the front of tannisargāt (तन्निसर्गात्) is that seeing.
Sanskrit in this line
An ablative answers 'from what?' Two ablatives with vā (वा) are two from-whats. The sūtra (सूत्र) does not rank them.
