1.1.17

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.1.17

नादवृद्धिः परा

nādavṛddhiḥ parā

The line

The increase of the resonance is something other than an increase of the word.

नेपालीमा

नादको वृद्धि शब्दको वृद्धिभन्दा अर्कै कुरा हो।

Where it sits

Vṛddhiḥ (वृद्धिः) from 1.1.11 is the increase being relocated. The word remains the subject that is not increased. Parā (परा) says the increase is a different thing.

Split: nāda-vṛddhiḥ (नाद-वृद्धिः) + parā (परा)

nāda-vṛddhiḥ (नाद-वृद्धिः)nominative singular, femininethe increase of resonance, of the noise that carries the word
parā (परा)nominative singular, feminineother, a different thing from an increase of the word

The phrases

The word has no parts. What has no parts does not grow by a heap of parts. The same syllables are heard when one person speaks and when many speak.

Many manifesting contacts reach the circle of the ear in quick succession, and the hearing seems large, as if the word had parts. Those contacts are what the word nāda (नाद) names. The increase is an increase of nāda (नाद). It is other than an increase of the word.

Sanskrit in this line

The pāṭha (पाठ) writes nādavṛddhiparā (नादवृद्धिपरा), with the visarga dropped and the two words run together. The line is nādavṛddhiḥ (नादवृद्धिः) parā (परा). Parā (परा) agrees with vṛddhiḥ (वृद्धिः).

Say it back

Separate nāda (नाद), the resonance, from the word that the resonance manifests.
