Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) Sūtra (सूत्र)
Executive summary
Pūrva (पूर्व) Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) is the earlier inquiry into the Veda. The book is Jaimini's Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) Sūtra (सूत्र). Dharma here is what a Vedic command indicates, not a mood and not a social custom. Perception sees what is already there. A command speaks of what is to be brought about. Book 1 is that philosophy. Books 2 to 12 decide the details of the rites: which act is which, what serves what, in what order, and who may perform.

Pūrva (पूर्व) Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) is the earlier inquiry. The book is Jaimini's Mīmāṃsā-sūtra (मीमांसा-सूत्र). Mīmāṃsā (मीमांसा) means a desire to think a text through. The text is the Veda of injunctions: the sacrifices, the offerings, and the sentences that tell you to do them.
The first line is athāto dharmajijñāsā (अथातो धर्मजिज्ञासा), now, therefore, the desire to know dharma (धर्म). Dharma (धर्म) here is not a mood and not a social rule. It is the thing indicated by a Vedic command. Perception cannot see it, because perception sees what is already there, and a command speaks of what is to be brought about.
Śabara (शबर)'s bhāṣya (भाष्य) is the companion. Kumārila (कुमारिल) and Prabhākara (प्रभाकर) are the two great later readings. The sitting names them only where the line is one of their splits.
This edition has 2,727 sūtras (सूत्र) in twelve books. Book 1 is the philosophy: authority, the sentence, and the word. Books 2 through 12 apply that philosophy to the rites. A line there is often four words, and it decides one detail of one sacrifice. The sitting says, in plain language, what is being decided.
The pair is Vedānta (वेदान्त). Jaimini reads the Veda as telling you what to do. Bādarāyaṇa (बादरायण) reads it as telling you what is real. The Brahma Sūtra (सूत्र) quotes Jaimini by name when the two inquiries meet.
2727 of 2727 lines are written out word by word.
The word-by-word glosses on the part pages were generated automatically and have not all been reviewed.
