1.2.11

Mīmāṃsā Sūtra / Adhyāya 1 / 1.2.11

रूपात् प्रायात्

rūpāt prāyāt

The line

Because of the form, and because that is the usual reading.

नेपालीमा

रूपका कारण, र त्यो नै चलनको पाठ भएकाले।

Where it sits

Guṇavāda (गुणवाद) from 1.2.10 is the reading these reasons support. Rūpa (रूप) is the form shared by the thing and the word's ordinary object. The gold and the taking of it are the injunction. The thief-sentence is its remainder.

Split: rūpāt (रूपात्) + prāyāt (प्रायात्)

Sanskrit, in depth

The words

WordGrammarSense
rūpāt (रूपात्)ablative singular, neuterbecause of the form
prāyāt (प्रायात्)ablative singular, masculinebecause of the usual case, because that is how such words mostly work

The phrases

Gold comes to be in the hand, and then he takes it. The sequel, 'the mind is a thief, speech speaks falsehood,' belongs to that injunction because the words still expect it. The sentence blames, and the blame praises the gold. Ordinary blame works the same way: what use is the sage, Devadatta is the one to feed.

The mind is not a thief. Thieves have a hidden form, and so does a thought. The word is figurative because of that form. 'Speech speaks falsehood' is read the same way because that is the prevailing pattern. The two ablatives support the figurative reading.

Sanskrit in this line

Both words are reason-ablatives. Prāya (प्राय) is the greater part, what is mostly the case.

Say it back

Give the two reasons, and say what is being decided about the gold: the blame praises the taking of it.
